Learning and Translational Research
The Center for Excellence in Aging & Community Wellness is a translational research center that utilizes a Participatory Action Practice Model (PAP), mixed methods program planning and evaluation, and web-based technologies to advance knowledge on topics related to health and successful aging-in-place. We promote the adoption of effective, innovative practices and policies that address the needs of aging persons, their families and caregiver, and the communities in which they live.
Participatory Action Practice Model (PAP)
The Participatory Action Practice Model (PAP) combines guiding principles from Social Work Generalist Practice approaches, Action Research, and Stages of Change Theory in a dynamic practice model that enhances the person-in-the-environment conceptual framework to a level that immerses the practitioner in community-led change. The framework is by definition “action” and “collaboration” based, with CEACW playing both a nurturing and liaison role between the creators of new technologies (generally evidence-based health program or best practices) and the organizations/ individuals seeking to adopt them. By providing this link, the Center brings research based knowledge to the community and facilitates the engagement of stakeholder groups in planning, implementation, and dissemination of new and innovative technologies.
Mixed Methods Program Planning and Evaluation
As a translational research center housed within the School of Social Welfare at the State University of New York at Albany, the Center for Excellence in Aging & Community Wellness employs the latest technologies in program planning and evaluation. Planning techniques routinely include team based logic modeling, facilitated brainstorming, action planning, and work plan development. Well versed in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, CEACW staff work with project stakeholders in conducting both outcome and process based evaluations.
Web-Based Technologies
The Center for Excellence in Aging & Community Wellness utilizes the web as both an educational outreach tool and to conduct ongoing dialogues with its community partners around topics related to health promotion, successful aging-in-place, and/or program implementation. Although some of our learning community websites are dedicated to specific projects and membership is limited to involved community partners, CEACW webinars and group site for the sharing of information on the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) in New York State are open to the public.
